13 Bhumi Model
Most spiritual methods have path maps. Path maps, as the name suggests, are maps that give us cues in regards to our location in relation to the desired destination. In tantric practice, the destination is full enlightenment, or buddhahood. In Amrita Mandala we use a map of 13 bhumis, which can be translated as grounds. These bhumis are related to certain subtle energy centers (Skt. chakra) of our energy body (see illustration below), and tell us where are and how much more we have to go. Another way to understand the bhumis are as stages of the path.
Bhumis are widely discussed in traditional Buddhist texts such as Avatamsaka Sutra, but no established Buddhist tradition today use it as a practical path map. One aspect of Amrita Baba’s dharma work is to re-establish this ancient knowledge.
In Amrita Sangha we discuss our awakening experiences (bhumi openings), as well as the further stages of settling into the natural state (bhumi perfections) openly. Due to the exact practices that enable our practitioners to have recognitions of the natural state on a daily basis, as well as the detailed knowledge of what awakening experiences are (and what they are not), our sangha members make quick progress from the beginning of their practice.
